Unreported crime

During 2008-09, there were 377,433 crimes recorded in Scotland.1 However, the recently published Scottish Crime and Justice Survey (SCJS) estimates that around 1.04 million crimes take place each year.2 Therefore it can be asserted that over 60% of crime committed in Scotland is unreported.

These figures clearly demonstrate a huge gap between actual and reported crime figures. The trend is similar across Europe and the rest of the world, with a large part of all victims deciding not to report the crime to the Police for a variety of reasons. This is why Victim Support Scotland’s conference is so important. It will enable practitioners and academics to share knowledge and develop an overall view on how to address the reasons why victims’ choose not to report. The conference will also highlight how to provide support to this large group of victims that does not come to the attention of the official criminal justice authorities.
